Following Rob Bell’s UK Tour

From Zondervan’s UK Sales and Marketing Manager, Ian Matthews:

On Tuesday, I go off on tour with Rob Bell on the "Calling All Peacemakers" tour. The first stop is in Belfast on Tuesday at the Spires Conference Centre, followed by Dublin on Thursday (14th). We then fly back to the UK, with Manchester on the 15th — I then disappear off to Grand Rapids (Michigan, in the States) for a few days — before two London dates on the 19th and 22nd, Southampton on the 25th, Cardiff on the 26th, Wolverhampton is the 28th, Glasgow the 30th and finally Cambridge on the 1st July. Whew!

It’s exciting — we’ve exceeded ticket sales already on the first half of the tour, and the second half looks like it will follow suit.

So … with this in mind I do plan to keep blogging during the tour giving a ‘backstage’ view of the events.

See you soon!

Robert E. Webber Now Worshipping in Heaven

Robert E. WebberRobert E. Webber, a theologian well-known for his work on worship and the early church, died of pancreatic cancer April 27 at his home in Sawyer, Mich. At the time of his death, Bob was the William R. and Geraldyn B. Myers professor ministry at Northern Seminary in Lombard, Ill. He was also the president of the Institute for Worship Studies in Jacksonville, Florida, and professor of theology emeritus at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois.Click for more information about Listening to the Beliefs of Emerging Churches

Paul Engle, Zondervan executive editor and associate publisher, says, "We at Zondervan feel privileged to have worked with Bob on Listening to the Beliefs of Emerging Churches, what ended up being the last book of his released while he was still alive. Bob was a delight to work with on a project in which he pulled together a diversity of young leaders in the emerging church. To the end he remained conversant with some of the twists and turns of the emerging church and was able to connect with leaders many years his junior. It was fun to sketch out the vision for the book with him in a restaurant in Los Angeles on a warm spring day and then over many months exchange emails and phone calls until the final product was given birth in February of 2007.

Click for more information about Worship Old and New"Bob’s concluding assessment of the emerging church at the end of Listening to the Beliefs of Emerging Churches was vintage work that reveals his wisdom and warm Christian faith. His final words of the book say, ‘rather than perpetuate the divisions that exist between the traditionalists, the pragmatists, and the emergents, the best we can all do is to join the conversation and learn from each other, affirming that we all stand in the historic faith as we seek to understand it and apply it to the new world in which we minister. Who knows where that might take us?’"

Zondervan will pay tribute to Bob at Emergence 2007: Seattle (June 1-2), the first of three events to open to regional audiences the discussion started in Listening to the Beliefs of Emerging Churches.

Rob Bell’s Sex God Tour – Post 2

(written by John Topliff, Zondervan executive traveling with Rob)

We experienced another terrific event Feb. 15 at the University of Kentucky during Rob Bell’s Sex God Tour. Here are the highlights:

1. Over 1,400 people. A standing-room-only-crowd in the University of Kentucky’s Center for the Arts Auditorium gave Rob Bell a raucous and loud UK welcome as he dashed onto the stage at 8:20 p.m. It was as if the UK Wildcat basketball team just ran onto the court in Rupp Arena. What excitement!

2. Rob began with a brief word about the 5-plus-hour drive from Detroit to Lexington, and his new book, Sex God.

3. Rob quickly opened the evening to Q & A. Many questions were focused on Rob’s new book and issues of sexuality and relationships — perfect for this college audience.

4. The UK Christian Student Fellowship sponsored the event and they did a remarkable job spreading the word throughout Lexington and to near-by colleges.

5. 80% of the attendees were students, most from UK, with many from Asbury College and Seminary.

6. Special tour posters and flyers, plus word-of-mouth, drew attendees; some who had been waiting in the fine arts auditorium since before 7 p.m.

7. Over 400 copies of Sex God were sold, as well as many copies of Velvet Elvis, and NOOMA DVDs.

8. NOOMA 015: You premiered to strong applause and great appreciation. Many people wished we had NOOMA 015 for sale at the event (it releases on March 16).

9. Rob greeted hundreds of people, had his photograph taken, and signed books for over 90 minutes after the NOOMA premier.

10. Read Ben Witherington’s blog: "Rob Bell hits Lexington and a Packed-Out House".

The rest of the tour is as follows:
March 6: University of Washington—Seattle
March 7: University of California—Berkeley
March 8: University of California—Los Angeles
March 9: Northwestern University—Chicago

The Supreme Event of William Wilberforce’s Life

William Wilberforce: A Hero for Humanity

Many consider the abolition of the slave trade to be the greatest moment in William Wilberforce’s life. The distinguished historian G. M. Trevelyan called this achievement "one of the turning events in the history of the world." From Wilberforce’s perspective, however, the supreme event of his life was his Great Change, or embrace of Christianity. He believed that "God’s good providence had checked and turned him through a miracle of mercy." This transformation redirected the course of his life, and without it he would not have become the reformer he was.

—Kevin Belmonte, William Wilberforce: A Hero for Humanity

Rob Bell’s Sex God Tour – Post 1

(written by John Topliff, Zondervan executive traveling with Rob)

Rob Bell at the University of MichiganRob Bell’s Sex God Tour launched in Ann Arbor at the historic Power Center on the University of Michigan campus on Thursday, February 8. Here are the highlights:

1. A capacity crowd: over 1,000 people attended. Great energy in the room.
2. Over 1/2 of the attendees were students from Michigan, Eastern Michigan, and surrounding colleges. This was our goal — engage students with Rob’s message about what it means to be human and to be in relationship with people and with God.
3. Every copy of Sex God sold out, and many copies of Velvet Elvis, and NOOMA DVDs were sold.
4. Rob answered questions from the audience for 55 minutes. Questions were intelligent, searching, wide-ranging (violence, violence in the Old Testament, depression, the church’s view of recovery, predestination, univeralism). Rob was funny, serious, stimulating, biblically wise, poignant, powerful. The audience did not want the evening to end. Rob received a huge round of applause.
5. NOOMA 015: You premiered to an enthusiastic ovation (this NOOMA will release on March 16).
6. Rob signed books and greeted people until long after 10:30 p.m.
Read the Detroit Free Press article.

Let’s give God praise! The message of the gospel was declared clearly, lovingly, and powerfully by Rob Bell on the campus of the University of Michigan.

Modern Slavery Takes Many Ugly Forms

Be the Change: Your Guide to Freeing Slaves and Changing the World in Other Ways

Modern slavery takes many ugly forms. It can be anything from whole families getting into medical debt and having to work in a brickyard till they die; to little girls working in brothels; to kids being forced to roll cigarettes all day long. In fact, there are actually more slaves in the world today than there were during the entire transatlantic slave trade!

When I heard about situations like these, I felt motivated to do something. So for the last few years, I’ve been doing what I can to end these oppressive practices.

It’s amazing how this 15-year-old kid is making a difference. Any comments or testimonies today?
